When kids have fun, they seem to have a inbuilt tolerance for chilly water, but the children wetsuit allows for a lot more fun. They allow your kid more time around the water at some of the "cooler" locations, so they can enjoy the water longer with not getting chilly.
The first thing you want to check is the water temperature where your kid will be in. This will be your first concern for selecting one of the two main types of the kids wetsuit.
From 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit - The Shorty
These have more flexibility than full length wetsuits through the short arms and legs. This makes it also much easier to get in and out of them. Of course they will not have as much heat as a full length wetsuit. To play around at the edge of water with cooler temperatures, those shorties can also work for a time. These form of wetsuits are also known as "spring-suits" or "springing suits". Most of these are 2-3mm in thickness.
Full wetsuits for 55-70 degrees Fahrenheit
The full length wetsuit also provides more heat than the short wet suit. These are also better for a longer timein the water, as even in water with higher temperatures the small body of a kid loses energy pretty quick and your child gets chilly. The upper end of this temperature range will demand a 2-3mm thick wetsuit, while the 50 degrees require at least a 3-5mm kids wetsuit. Below this temperature there are even 7mm wetsuits, but it's almost certainly simply too darned chilly for the kids anyhow.
The children wetsuit offers more than purely insulation. They also aid as sun blocker, so you do not have to slather on as much lotion, one more benefit for any parent. A kids wetsuit also provides additional cover against scratches and abrasions. Full wetsuits purposely supply additional protection against getting sunburned and biting aquatic life, like jellyfish and plankton.
