Which Wetsuit Is Appropriate For Your Kid
When children have fun, they seem to have a natural tolerance for cool water, but the kids wetsuit allows for far more pleasure. They allow your kid more in water time at some of the "cooler" places, so they can enjoy the water longer with not getting cool.
The initial thing you want to check is the temperature of the water where your kid will be in. This will be your main issue for choosing one of the two main types of the wetsuit for kids.
Shorty wetsuit for 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit
These have more flexibility than full length wetsuits through the short arms and legs. This makes it also much easier to slip in and out of them. Of course they will not have as much warmth as a full length wetsuit. To play around at the edge of water with cooler temperatures, those shorties can also work for a while. These kind of wetsuits are also known as "spring-suits" or "springing suits". Most of these are 2-3mm in thickness.
Full wetsuits for 55-70 degrees Fahrenheit
The full wetsuit also provides more protection than the short wet suit. Those are also better for a longer periodin the water, as even in water with higher temperatures the small body of a kid loses energy pretty quick and your child gets cool. The warmer end of this temperature range will demand a 2-3mm thick wetsuit, whereas the 50 degrees require at least a 3-5mm wetsuit for kids. Below that temperature there are even 7mm wetsuits, but it's almost certainly simply too darned cool for the children anyhow.
The kids wetsuit offers more than purely insulation. They also serve as sun blocker, so you do not have to slather on as much lotion, another bonus for any parent. A wetsuit for kids also provides additional cover against scratches and abrasions. Full wetsuits purposely supply additional protection against getting sunburned and biting aquatic life, like jellyfish and plankton.
The correct sizing is permanently a problem, so ensure you check the manufacturer's size chart. Some will show height and weight recommendations as others will also provide extra body measurements. Characteristically kids grow fast, so when you buy the wetsuit, it should not be too tight, to give the kid some space to grow a little bit, but not too loose,though, or your kid will lose the protection from the environment and get cool sooner.
