Loads of Glenwood Springs Activities Packed into a Small Space
Colorado’s Roaring Fork Valley – a spectacular depository of nature in all of its glory – presents an absolute treasure trove of summer vacation activities.
Carved out of the Elk Mountains on the western edge of the Rockies, the Roaring Fork Valley begins near 11,000-foot Independent Pass, and ambles along with the flow of the Roaring Fork River. Nearly the entire valley is shrouded by the conifers and aspens of the White River National Forest – the most popular forest destination in the nation – according to the United States Forest Service.
There is no question the hottest hiking and backpacking location in the Roaring Fork area is the Maroon Bells area near Snowmass. Two of the state’s highest peaks, the Bells soar above 14,000 feet. The unusual topography of the area allows incredible vistas. A complimentary shuttle bus departs every twenty minutes during the summer to Maroon Lake, where hikers and backpackers will find access to Maroon Peak and Pyramid Peak.
Camping in the Snowmass wilderness area is a huge draw. The isolated meadows of a glacial valley with natural, wild pastureland calls to hardy campers by the thousands each month.
Majestic camping locales can be accessed near Carbondale, which sits in the shadow of 13,000-foot Mount Sopris.
Carbondale is nestled into the junction of the Roaring Fork and Crystal rivers. Aside from numerous retail sites and RV parks, the federal government is in charge of the stunning Avalanche Creek site, which has limited availability during the busy summer season. A minimal fee for overnight stays is charged but the panoramic views from above 7,000 feet, the easy access to excellent trout fishing on Avalanche Creek, ready access to numerous mountain trails, and the relative isolation just ten minutes from town draws tourists like moths to a flame for summer vacation activities in the Roaring Fork.
State and federal agencies also oversee and keep up scores of entirely free campsites throughout the Roaring Fork Valley; however, there is a good portion of the land owned by private individuals so it is always a good idea to watch for the little signs marking private property.

The Ruedi Recreation region, near Basalt on the Fryingpan River, includes Ruedi Reservoir. The reservoir is popularsuitable for water-skiing and boating, and the mountains surrounding the area is a huge draw for hunters.
World-class fishing is a massive magnet for visitors and the area is filled with professional fishing guides who can make a fishing trip far more enjoyable. The rivers run very high during the spring melt when water pours from the mountains into the current. From April to September, though, the rivers in the area can be waded or float fished.
The Roaring Fork Valley boast so many possibilities for summer vacation activities. And it is not simply fishing and camping. The rivers are always populated with kayakers and groups of whitewater rafters braving the choppy currents.
